Araluguppe Chennakesava Temple

Araluguppe Chennakesava Temple is an architectural masterpiece of the Hoysala Empire, dating back to approximately 1250 AD. The temple is dedicated to Lord Chennakesava (a form of Vishnu) and is famous for its incredibly intricate ceiling carvings and exterior stone reliefs. The ceiling of the main hall (Mukhamantapa) features a circular carving of Lord Ugra Narasimha surrounded by the eight guardians of directions (Ashta Dikpalas) with outstanding detail. The temple represents the high point of mature Hoysala sculpture.

The stone work on the temple walls is incredibly detailed, showing stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana. The ceiling dome is carved with a level of detail that looks like ivory carving rather than stone. The quiet village setting of Araluguppe allows visitors to admire this art in peace, away from crowded tourist spots.

The temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and has been restored to preserve its original beauty. A tour of the temple shows the artistic skill and architectural design of the Hoysala dynasty, who turned hard soapstone into detailed, lasting monuments.
