Mandara Giri (Basadi Hill)

Mandara Giri, also known as Basadi Betta, is a historic Jain pilgrimage center situated just off the Bengaluru-Tumakuru national highway. The hill itself has around 435 steps and houses four ancient Jain Basadis (temples) dating back to the 12th century. At the base of the hill is the star attraction: the Guru Mandir, a unique, architecturally stunning shrine shaped like a peacock feather (pinchi) used by Jain monks, standing 81 feet tall. Next to it stands a massive 21-foot-tall monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali (Gomateshwara), overlooking a tranquil lake.

The unique circular, organic architecture of the Guru Mandir has made it an engineering marvel and a hotspot for photography. Inside the shrine, colorful murals recount the lives of Jain Tirthankaras. The climb up the hill consists of smooth steps carved directly into the rock face, surrounded by panoramic views of agricultural landscapes and the Mydala lake below.

This site holds major heritage value, showing the historic coexistence of Jainism in the core of old Mysore kingdom territories. The tranquil environment of the hillside, away from the hustle of the highway, offers peace and spiritual reflection.

Jain temples follow strict principles of non-violence. Leather items (belts, wallets) must be left in vehicles or designated areas.

Mydala lake is a source of drinking water. Do not throw garbage or step into the water with footwear.

The peacocks and wild birds surrounding the hill must not be fed bread or processed snacks.

Keep voices low while exploring the historical basadis at the hilltop. Portable speakers are strictly banned.

Located at Pandithanahalli, 11 km South of Tumakuru, just 1 km off the Bengaluru-Tumakuru highway (NH-48). Easily accessible by car or bike directly from Bengaluru (75 km away).

Easy. The 435 steps are well-laid and have gentle slope rises. Takes about 20-30 minutes of gentle walking to reach the summit.

4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The setting sun lights up the peacock-feather Guru Mandir and casts long shadows over the Bahubali monolith.

A clean vegetarian canteen is operated at the base by the Jain trust. Restrooms are available near the parking complex.
