Hutridurga (Uttari Betta)

Hutridurga, also known popularly as Uttari Betta, is one of the Navadurgas (nine hill forts) around Bengaluru. Located at an altitude of 3,708 feet, the fort has seven tiers of fortifications and passes through stone gateways, narrow pathways, and historic watchtowers. The trek goes through lush green vegetation and stone walls, leading to the Summit which houses the ancient Sankeshwara Temple. The trek is widely considered one of the most scenic weekend treks, offering amazing sunrise views and rocky vistas.

The trek is highly popular among sunrise seekers, who climb in the early morning to watch the sun rise over the mist-covered valleys. Along the way, you pass through the 'Kempe Gowda Dwara' and several stone arches that have stood for centuries. The rocky steps are surrounded by scrub forest and dry grass, providing a rustic and historic trekking feel.

Historically, this fort played a key role during the Anglo-Mysore wars. Its natural defenses made it a strong fort that was hard to capture. The summit offers views of the Kunigal plains and adjacent hills, making it a great spot for landscape photography.

Carry all snack wrappers and bottles back to the base. There is no waste collection service on the hill.

The Sankeshwara temple is an active place of worship. Remove shoes before entering the temple area at the summit.

Do not light campfires or discard burning matchsticks. Dry grass on the slopes is highly prone to forest fires.

Stick to the main path. The surrounding cliffs are steep and have loose gravel.

Located near Santhepet village in Kunigal Taluk, 55 km South of Tumakuru. Direct highway buses run to Kunigal; hire local transport to the base from Kunigal town.

Takes about 1.5 hours to reach the top. The trail has well-laid stone steps at the start, followed by short sections of rock walking.

Start climbing by 5:15 AM to reach the summit before dawn. The mist-covered views at sunrise are breathtaking.

Carry water and energy bars. There are no vendors along the path. Wear sturdy shoes with good traction.
