Visitor Overview

Namada Chilume is a beautiful natural spring located in the Devarayanadurga forest reserve. The spring water flows out of a small hole in a solid rock face and never dries up, even during peak summer. The spot is surrounded by a dense forest habitat, making it home to a variety of deer, monkeys, and wild birds. The forest department runs a deer safari park, an direct aviary, and a botanical herbal garden at the site, making it a wonderful picnic spot for families.

The mythological story of Lord Rama shooting an arrow into the rock to find water makes this place sacred. The water that flows from the rock is collected in a small pond, surrounded by fences to protect it. Visitors can walk along the paths under the shade of trees, listening to the birds.

The deer park allows children to see spotted deer up close, while the herbal garden has rare plants and trees with labels explaining their medicinal uses. It is a peaceful place to spend a weekend afternoon with family.

Historical Context

According to Hindu mythology, during the Treta Yuga, Lord Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita stayed here on their way to Lanka. When Lord Rama wanted to apply 'Nama' (sacred mark) to his forehead, he could not find water. He shot an arrow into the rock, and water immediately gushed out. Hence, it is named Namada Chilume (Spring of Rama's mark).
