Koratagere Nanjundeshwara Temple

The Nanjundeshwara Temple of Koratagere is an exquisite example of late Hoysala and Vijayanagara architectural fusion, built entirely of grey granite with intricate carvings that have survived centuries of time. Dedicated to Lord Shiva (Nanjundeshwara), this temple is considered the spiritual heart of Koratagere taluk and draws pilgrims from across Tumakuru district.

The temple complex features a beautifully carved mandapa (pillared hall) with ornate ceiling panels depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. The main sanctum houses an ancient Shivalinga that is believed to have been installed by sages during the Treta Yuga, though the present structure dates to the 12th-14th centuries.

The temple tank, Nanjundeshwara Pushkarini, is a geometrically perfect stepped tank (pushkarini) with elaborate stone carvings on each step. Devotees believe that bathing in this tank on Mondays brings blessings and fulfilment of wishes. The surrounding temple complex includes sub-shrines to Parvati, Ganesha, and various other deities.

Koratagere town, where the temple is located, is also famous for the Koratagere Lake — one of the largest natural lakes in Tumakuru district that serves as a seasonal wetland for migratory birds. Combining the temple visit with a walk by the lake makes for a perfect half-day excursion from Tumkur.

Do not touch the stone carvings — skin oils damage ancient sculptures.
