Kunigal Lake

Kunigal Lake, also known as Kunigal Kere, is a beautiful man-made reservoir located in the centre of Kunigal town, just 35 km from Tumkur. Spread across over 1,000 acres, this scenic lake is a major birdwatching destination and a serene escape from the busy city life.

The lake is fed by the Shimsha river system and has been an important water source for Kunigal town for centuries. During winter months (November to February), the lake attracts thousands of migratory birds from Central Asia, Siberia, and other parts of India. Species documented include painted storks, open-billed storks, spoonbills, grey herons, purple herons, cormorants, various duck species, and the spectacular bar-headed geese.

Kunigal Lake has a well-maintained pathway around the perimeter, making it perfect for morning walks and evening strolls. The local administration has developed a small park near the main bund with seating areas for visitors. The lake is surrounded by coconut and areca palm trees that add to the scenic beauty.

The town of Kunigal itself is famous for its silk industry and traditional Kasuti embroidery. The combination of the lake, the weekly silk market, and the traditional crafts make Kunigal a worthwhile destination. Local food specialities including traditional Karnataka breakfast dishes like akki rotti and ragi mudde are available at the town's local eateries.
